As an artist I am primarily inspired by colour and light and a sense of space - particularly a wild open landscapes, or on an empty beach but also could be by light filled interior rich with flowers and fabrics.

My paintings are personal interpretations and reflections of these subjects, blending realism and abstraction. I indulge in my love of colour and explore the pictorial space through expressive mark making and building up layers of delicious paint.

Much of my inspiration comes from open spacious landscapes from extremities of our wonderful island, with a particular focus on Scotland and East Anglia with a handful of painterly jaunts abroad. I love working directly,  immersed in the experience of the different places, the light, the sounds and the textures. I record the changing elements and shapes with quick sketches, drawing with different materials and layers of mark making.

In my studio, I work on a series of paintings looking to find a balance between the subject and the abstract. I want my paintings to have their own freedom as I am not trying to replicate a specific view. I start in a spontaneous way, paintings loose expressive marks and shapes and enjoy the various qualities of the paint such as broad loaded brush marks over translucent glazes. The energy of the intuitive process in itself inspires me as does mixing the perfect colour combinations. I want to take risks with the paint and am always curious to explore mark making so that I create evocative paintings that have a strong sense of place but go beyond obvious observation .

I trained for four years at Edinburgh College of Art, where I gained  both the discipline and joy of drawing and had a wonderful studio space to experiment with paint in. I was awarded a scholarship term at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Strasbourg in my third year and finally graduated with a BA Hons in Drawing and Painting in 1989.

My married name is Kate Sporborg and my studio is at our home near Newmarket, Suffolk, where I live with my husband William, our two children, and a myriad of animals.
